New Year, New You
Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions?
Did they include:
- Getting fit?
- Losing weight?
- Joining the gym?
- Quitting smoking?
- Refocusing on your health?
- Making more time to relax?
Well that’s where we may be able to help! Student Life Sport and Healthy Lifestyles have some new and exciting initiatives happening to help you to stick to them!
Getting fit? Losing weight?
A great way of getting fit and/or losing weight is to join a fitness class. Many people find that the classes motivate them and keep them dedicated to their new resolutions! Take a look at the Sports Centre timetable.
Joining the Gym?
It is quick and simple to join the Sports Centre. If you are in University accommodation then you only need to pay a small joining fee of £20 for the whole year and if you are a student in private accommodation then the costs are still minimal for the benefits you gain – click here for the price list.
Quitting smoking?
We have a Stop Smoking Advisor dedicated to helping the students here on campus.
Samrah is based at the Health Hub in the Sports Centre on a Monday and you can drop by and see her or you can book an appointment by calling 0161 295 2985 or emailing studentlife-healthpromotion@salford.ac.uk
Refocusing on your health?
We have an array of different events happening in the Health Hub in the afternoons of this semester. If you want to improve your health then this may be the place to start. We have sexual health services including free condoms (Tuesday), stop smoking service (Mondays), Complementary Therapies (Wednesday), and healthy eating advice (some Thursdays). Check the website for more information.
We also have a Health Trainer on campus who can work with you in helping you to achieve goals you have set for yourself. You can get in contact with her by calling 0757960677 or by email on Helen.Hayes@unlimitedpotential.org.uk.
Making more time to relax?
We have Complementary Therapies available every Wednesday in the Health Hub in Sports Centre from 11th January 10.30 – 6.00. A wide range of treatments including aromatherapy massages, reflexology and facials are available for a small cost of £10 per half an hour treatment. To book call 0161 295 5060.
We also have Spa Afternoons at the Sports Centre on 18th Jan and 8th Feb (11.30 – 4.30) where you can enjoy the swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and a complementary therapy for a small charge. No need to book.
If you would like any more information on anything above then please email studentlife-healthpromotion@salford.ac.uk or check out our website for more details.

Optimum Advent: Top Tip 16
Practice in exam conditions

In tip 5 we said it would be a good idea to use past papers to help you revise. As you get closer to your exams, it is a good idea to use the past papers and complete them in the time you will be allocated in your real exam and with no music on or other distractions. This will give you a good picture of what topics you need to focus on and how long you will have to complete each question.
Optimum Advent: Top Tip 15
Get out into the fresh air!

An easy and free way of getting some exercise in whilst on a break from revision is to go for a walk. It can also help to calm you before going into an exam.
Why not try this Salford Museum and Art Gallery Walk?
Or join a group today at 2pm at the front of University House to go on a Healthy Walk with the University Health Trainer. Click here for more details.
Optimum Advent: Top Tip 14
Don’t revise everything

The key to good revision is to pick the key topics for each module and use past papers to guide you on the topics that are very important within the module.
Optimum Advent: Top Tip 13
Try Wholegrain
Whole grains are perfect food for exams and revision. They have a low glycemic index which means they digest slowly and keep you full for longer which can help improve your concentration levels.
Wholegrain at different times of the day
Breakfast
Cereal is a great way of starting your day with wholegrain. Many boxes now display clearly that the cereal contains wholegrain.
Lunch
Why not swap your sandwich bread from white to wholemeal or seeded? This is a simple swap that could keep you going for longer.
Snacks
Why not try Ryvita crackers with hummus and salad?
Tea
Swap your normal rice or pasta for the wholemeal (brown) alternative to help you study in the evening.
Optimum Advent: Top Tip 12
Sleep!

Make sure during times of revision and exams you get enough sleep. Finish studying two hours before going to bed and do something relaxing to help you switch off. Why not try our relaxation technique from top tip 7?

Know what those key words mean

What is the difference between outline and summarise? Explain and justify? Knowing what these words mean can have an impact on the way in which you answer an exam question.
Take a look at this excellent Revision and Exams guide from the Study Skills team, the final pages give you a breakdown on what the common words used in exam questions mean.
